Serena is a Doctoral Researcher at the Institute for European Studies (IES) and the Department of Political Science of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). She is part of the joint research programme "Evaluating Democratic Governance in Europe" (EDGE) and the IES cluster "Migration, Diversity and Justice".
In July 2013 she obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in EU Law on Immigration and Asylum by the Odysseus Academic Network at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). She holds a MA in International Politics and Relations from the University of Pisa (Italy) and a BA in International Communications from the University for Foreigners of Perugia (Italy). During her Master, she spent a year in Paris (France) as Erasmus student at the Department of Hautes Etudes Internationales (HEI) of the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (I.Na.L.C.O.). From 2009 to 2012 Serena worked in the International Development Co-operation sector in the Western Balkans and coordinated Humanitarian Aid interventions in Eastern Africa.
Serena is currently working on the project "The Europeanisation of Roma Women Policies and Politics in Central and Eastern European Member States".
Serena's research interests include migration and minorities, migrant integration, Roma rights, equality and non-discrimination policies.
